In the early days of Hawaiian Tropic, founded 53 years ago in Ormond Beach, Rice unsuccessfully tried to get his suntan lotion onto the shelves of a Florida beach shop. His solution was to convince several women at the beach to walk into the shop and ask the owner for Hawaiian Tropic by name.
